TRANSIENT SPACES – THE TOURIST SYNDROME

prologue  – A film series about current issues of mobility, tourism and migration
Compiled by: Tobias Hering, Marina Sorbello and Antje Weitzel

4–5 September 2010, starting at 4:00 pm – Admission free!

TRANSIENT SPACES – THE TOURIST SYNDROME

The film series focuses on the link between human mobility and the logistics of power: the movement of capital, the shifting centres of political power, the exchange of symbols and the circulation of pictures that accompany these phenomena as shadows, copies or phantasms. Focusing on the key locations of these movements and their architecture, or the stories of individuals for whom these places are a stage or refuge, these films explore contemporary forms of mobility and questions whether it is possible to anchor one’s personal biography in a world in which mobility has become an object as lucrative as it is precarious.

VERRÜCKTES BLUT

I have every right to rage at nature, and upon my honour, vouch to show it. Wasn’t it she who abandoned us naked and destitute on the shores of this great ocean of life? Swim if you can, she said, and if you are too ungainly – sink! I was given nothing. What I wish to make of myself is therefore my concern. We all have equal rights to great and lesser things. So hop to it! I intend to root out everything that limits me, all things I am not master of. For master I must be to get those things with violence that tenderness deprived me of.  Franz Moor The Robbers by Friedrich Schiller

ONİKİ EYLÜL

30 years of military power in Turkey
10–14 September

ONİKİ EYLÜL

On 12 September 1980 a military junta seized power in Turkey for the second time. The waves of persecution and destruction that followed left deep scars in the collective memory and in individual lives. The institutions and laws of the junta still dominate life in Turkey today.

We will be screening four films that explore the military coup and its consequences: the documentary film Kinder des September by Hülya Karcı and Meltem Öztürk, the feature films Uçurtmayı Vurmasınlar by Tunç Başaran and Septembersturm by Atif Yılmaz and a video piece by Özlem Sulak: September 12/12 Eylül.

INFLUX CONTROLS: I WANNA BE WANNA BE

Boyzie Cekwana is one of the most radical dancers and choreographers of his generation in South Africa. L. Weber, Neue Zürcher Zeitung

In Influx Controls: I wanna be wanna be the choreographer and dancer Boyzie Cekwana explores his human identity against the background of apartheid and global colonialism. The first part of the trilogy focuses on the denial of freedom. “Influx Control” was the name given to the rigid measures introduced by the South African government in 1923 to prevent the free movement of the black population and define their economic, political, social and cultural reality.

DER KLEINE BRUDER DES RUDERERS

At some point, all you want is for things to be practical. It would be practical not to have a skin, or a story. Finish.

Where should Kari be buried. On this side, or the other?

Kari jumped out of the window 3 days ago. Her friends are waiting for the rower who will ferry her body out onto the lake. A place that Kari never got to. No one knows why she killed herself, and no one wants to accept the fact.
